Sleep has long been known to improve performance on memory tests. Now, a new study suggests that an afternoon power nap may boost your ability to process and store information tenfold -- but only if you dream while you're asleep.
"When you dream, your brain is trying to look at connections that you might not think of or notice when [you're] awake," says the lead author of the study, Robert Stickgold, the director of the Center for Sleep and Cognition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston, Massachusetts. "In the dream...the brain tries to figure out what's important and what it should keep or dump because it's of no value."

In the study, Stickgold and his colleagues asked 99 college students to memorize a complex maze on a computer. The researchers then placed the students inside a virtual, 3-D version of the maze and asked them to navigate to another spot within it. After doing this several times, half of the participants took a 90-minute nap while the other half stayed awake and watched videos.

When the students were given the maze test again five hours later, the nappers did better than the students who had stayed awake, even those who had reviewed the maze in their heads. However, the nappers who dreamed about the maze -- one described being lost in a bat cave -- performed 10 times better than the nappers who didn't.

The students who dreamed about the maze did poorly on the test the first time around -- which may not be a coincidence, the researchers say. If a task is difficult for you, your brain seems to know it, and you may be more likely to dream about it than if the task were easier.

It doesn't even need to be a deep sleep, as the researchers found when they monitored the brain activity of the students while they slept. Although the deep slumber known as rapid eye movement (REM) is most closely associated with dreaming, the students' dreaming and learning occurred after as little as one minute of non-REM sleep.

Sometimes, when they believe what they hear or see from the commercials, it is very difficult to persuade them. Some of my tennis mates deeply believe in string damper can help them a lot.
However, this is not the era of Nicolaus Copernicus or Galileo Galilei, the myth can be challenged.

A tennis racket accessory designed to prevent 'tennis elbow' does not work and serves no scientific purpose, University of Birmingham research reveals.
Current top ten players Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick both attach anti-vibration string dampers to their rackets - a plastic device invented to reduce racket frame vibration to the forearm in order to avoid injuries. But during a season when tennis equipment sales are particularly buoyant, Birmingham's study shows all dampers really do is alter the sound of the racket and provide players with a 'lucky' charm.

A study by Dr Francois-Xavier Li and Dr Mike Jenkins reports there is no difference between rackets with and rackets without dampers when it comes to reducing frame vibration transfer to the forearm. Their research concludes that dampers are too small in comparison to the tennis racket to absorb the vibrations.

" String dampers do not reduce the amount of racket frame vibration received in the forearm. Dampers act on the racket strings like a light touch of a finger affects the high frequency vibration of a guitar string. The low damaging vibrations pass through, but the high audible though harmless vibrations are stopped.

Invented in 1960 by legendary tennis ace Rene Lacoste, anti-vibration string dampers are a popular part of tennis kit.  Andre Agassi famously used rubber bands as a string damper on his racket during his Wimbledon reign while today the likes of Lleyton Hewitt and Martina Hingis are also fans of the damper, along with thousands of  tennis players at all levels across the world.

Although there is no scientific basis to support the use of the device, Dr Li is quick not to dismiss the psychological importance of the damper.  He said:

He told BBC World Service they were about a millimetre in size and looked like jellyfish in a protective shell.

Eggs included
Bodies of multicellular animals have been found previously in sediment taken from an anoxic area - or "dead zone" - of the Black Sea, Professor Danovaro told BBC News. What the team found in the L'Atalante dead zone was three species of living animals, two of which contained eggs.
Although it was not possible to extract the animals alive in order to show that they could live without oxygen, the team was able to incubate the eggs in anoxic conditions aboard on the ship.

The eggs hatched successfully in a completely oxygen-free environment.

Twenty Dollars by Author Unknown





A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked. "Who would like this $20 bill?"
